Mr. Perfect

We Reds Fans were shocked and saddened with the sudden passing of a beloved member of our Fantasy Camp Family "Mr. Perfect" Tom Browning yesterday afternoon. Tom was one of the big reasons Reds Fantasy Camp is what it is, a truly great experience. Tom was never one of my coaches at camp, but it didn't matter. He interacted with just about everyone during the week of camp so you did get to know why he was so special out in Goodyear. My first interactions with Tom was not even at camp, it was at RedsFest years ago. He signed my 1990 world series program. Even in the minutes getting to chat with him then, he was very gracious and you can tell he enjoyed interacting with the fans. At camp is when he really shinned. Everyone has a Tom Browning story, even my wife Karen does. One of mine here, during my first camp's meet and greet, a few of us campers were talking to Todd Benzinger about what to expect the first day at camp and etc., Tom walks up and says "You guys are going to be so sore by the end of week, you won't be able to bend over to wipe your own ass!" That was Tom. Later that same week I was able to get a hit off him during a game. Afterwards he graciously singed a game ball. (See photos below). Later that same summer, at a Reds Hall of Fame signing, He signed a couple of those photos for me. He told me "Fantasy Camp is my favorite week of the year" He really loved it. He was everybody's friend out there. With his passing Camp, can't be the same. He touched so many of us with his humor, his passion for the Reds, for baseball, and for the Camp itself. You rookies I feel bad for. You won't have the pleasure of interacting with Tom at Camp. A special part of Camp passed away. Rest In Peace Mr. Perfect, praying for your family at this time.

"Nice Hit" he signed it

At the Pro game he struck me out. He signed this photo "Pay back is a Bitch!!

Signing Day!

Signing Interview

On Saturday a bunch of us Campers headed down to GABP for what is known as "Signing" Day. Basically in involves us signing our "contract" to play at Camp. We also had a round of Batting Practice under the stands and took a tour around GABP. Afterwards a bunch of us had a nice lunch at Jim and Jacks.

The Return of RedsFest

Finally! After 3 long years RedFest returns. Due to the pandemic RedsFest was canceled in 2020 and 2021. It returned this year. I've always enjoyed attending this event. Always great to talk Fantasy Camp, working at the booth. I love walking around soaking in the atmosphere. The Camp reunion whiffle ball game is always a great time to meet up with friends and make new friends.

Batting Practice at the Reds Hall of Fame

A  few years ago the Reds Hall of Fame folks started hosting batting practice sessions in the fall leading up to camp while the weather holds out. Tonight was a perfect night to get some swings in.

Getting Ready with conditioning

Since a bout of Covid ended my Dragons season prematurely, since late August I’ve started my pre camp conditioning. Basically it involves cardiovascular training with my stationary bike. Also adding some weight training. Late in September we started batting practice at Swingtime on Saturday mornings. Also every work out is followed by some hydrotherapy, aka Hot Tub. I learned at my first camp, the benefits of both hot and cold tubs. Two years ago about my own hot tub, and haven’t looked back.

5 year Anniversary of Field of Dreams

As we look forward this week to the Reds and Cubs playing at Field of Dreams In Dyersville Iowa, I'm taking a look back to 2017, when a bunch of campers went to the first ever Scott Green's Play at the Plate tourney at the Field Of Dreams site. As I wrote in an earlier post, one of the fringe benefits of RFC is playing with the same great friends you met at camp at these other tournaments. FOD is a very found memory. Playing the game I love with great friends, at the site of one of my all time favorite movies. What could be better? Here are some photos and videos of that great experience.
